ICE President Professor Jim Hall hosted a discussion on developing and delivering the UK’s new long-term infrastructure strategy.
The UK government has recently published a new 10-Year Infrastructure Strategy (10YIS) setting out its long-term vision for the country’s economic and social infrastructure.
This ICE presidential roundtable took place in advance of the strategy’s launch.
It convened a group of senior infrastructure leaders to discuss the strategy's key elements and how the government and supply chain can work together to ensure it is deliverable.
The discussion explored the following key points:
- The benefits and opportunities of taking a wider, systems view of infrastructure that incorporates economic and social infrastructure and spatial planning.
- How the government can make the UK more attractive to private investors and whether there should be a return to some form of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to help deliver the 10YIS.
- Other key components needed to deliver the 10YIS – including stronger clienting and public sector expertise, gap assessments, identifying quick wins, and unlocking innovation.
- The global competition for skills and investment, what other governments do better and the opportunity for the UK amid global economic uncertainty.
