A day in my life
I’m an early riser. Generally, I get to the office between 7-8am and have a 30 minute catch up with my team.
Following that, the day is a mix of meetings, calls, workshops and walks out on site.
I would recommend a career in civil engineering because every day is different.
Which individual project or person inspired you to become a civil engineer?
It wasn’t a person, it was seeing major civil engineering projects being built in the UK and while living abroad in Nigeria.

Every day is different. Also, you have the ability to improve the environment and standard of living, helping society progress in a sustainable way.
What’s the biggest/most complex thing you’ve made out of Lego? How long did it take you?
An articulated truck when I was 13 or 14 years old. That took a few days over Christmas.

Ben's career path
I graduated university in 1998 with a Civil Engineering with Management Honours degree.
I initially worked for a contractor, carrying out site engineering activities. I then became responsible for sub-contractor management, financial reporting, programming and planning, quality management, and design integration while always ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of the workforce.
In 2003, I achieved Chartered Engineer status and full membership of the ICE. I then undertook a consultancy role in the Middle East, focusing on design and project/programme management.
Returning to the UK in 2005, I joined Southern Water in a client role. I managed an innovative and collaborative five-year contract valued at £750m that encompassed 253 projects over four counties.
In 2011, I joined Gatwick Airport and was responsible for the capital development programme delivery and development of the business case for investment.
I joined CH2m (now Jacobs) in 2014, working on the Tideway Programme during the procurement and business development phase.
I’m now working on Europe’s largest construction site at Hinkley Point C (HPC), a £26Bn new nuclear power station.
