A day in my life

A typical day in my role as a civil engineering degree apprentice begins with reviewing my tasks and prioritising them based on urgency and project deadlines.

Most of the work assigned to me is completed in Civil 3D, where I update drawings, develop design models, and review layouts.

I use guidance and standards where needed to ensure the work I produce follows good engineering practice.

I also attend team meetings throughout the day, where I discuss the progress of my tasks, ask questions, and request feedback to help improve my understanding and accuracy.

I would recommend an apprenticeship in civil engineering because…

It offers hands-on experience while you work towards your degree.

We asked Deborah…

Which individual project or person inspired you to work in civil or infrastructure engineering?

I learned about civil engineering during my S5 work experience (equivalent to Year 12 in England and Wales or Year 13 in Northern Ireland).

I applied for my apprenticeship the following year as I knew I wanted to pursue civil engineering as a career after the work experience.

Complete this phrase: I’m a civil engineer apprentice, but I’m also …

A photographer!

How has being a member helped your career?

Becoming an ICE member has provided me with access to valuable webinars that support my professional and personal development.

What made you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I wasn’t attracted to the traditional route of going to university full-time before entering the workplace.

Instead, I wanted a more hands-on learning experience where I could apply what I learned directly to real projects.
