A day in my life

I have a lead structural role within multidisciplinary teams, designing buildings in the UK and abroad and managing the delivery of the structural design of multimillion-pound projects (£30m - £100m).

My experience involves conceptual and detailed design of new buildings (including multi-storey mixed-use, retail and offices), refurbishment of existing structures, structural surveys and seismic design.

A great deal of my job is working with the design team for my projects, normally made up of the architect, the mechanical and electrical engineer (who design the drainage, water, power, ventilation systems for a building) and any other people who give specialist input.

I’m a civil engineer, but I’m also  ... A baker! I love baking cakes!

My career inspiration

My parents played a major role in my career development. They always supported me from the time I was a student in school, through to university and now during my career. They’re always there for me and give me useful advice when I need it.

We asked Sotira…

what’s one great thing that you love about civil engineering that you didn’t know until you started working in the industry?

The wide variety of things you can do in civil engineering. You can start as a designer, move on to project management, get involved with contracts, work in the office or work on site.

which civil engineering myth(s) you would like to bust?

Engineering is not for girls.

which civil engineering project (past or present) do you wish you’d worked on?

I would love to work on a theme park structure!

what about being a civil engineer inspires you?

What I love about my job is solving problems and seeing the projects I have worked on become a reality – it’s so rewarding seeing your designs on paper taking shape in real life!

would you recommend a career in civil engineering?

The best thing about my job is working as part of a team to get a building designed and built, and then going past it when it’s finished and thinking ‘I did that’.

Education

I graduated with First-Class in BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering and a Distinction in MSc Civil Engineering, both from the University of Southampton. I’m a co-author of a paper in International Conference on Advanced Composites in Construction (ACIC2013).
