Corey Boyle
Corey Boyle, ICE Scotland’s Emerging Engineer 2025, is a First-Class MEng Civil Engineering graduate from Heriot-Watt University, originally from Crieff, Scotland, where the local train station closed in the 1960s, sparking his passion for reconnecting communities through transport.
After seven years offshore in catering, Corey challenged himself to pursue civil engineering as a mature student, motivated to work in an industry where he could make a difference, and funded his own HNC to gain entry to university. At university, he originated and led his master’s group project proposing the reopening of Edinburgh’s South Suburban Railway to passengers as a tram-train extension of Edinburgh Trams. Succeeding where four previous professional studies had failed, the project gained cross-party support, over 4,000 petition signatures, community backing, and media attention, and led to the formation of a community campaign group lobbying for its delivery. It was presented at the Scottish Parliament, a sold-out public event with over 150 attendees, the British Conference of Undergraduate Research 2025, and the UK Light Rail Conference 2025. It is now being considered in Edinburgh’s future mass transit plans.
Corey is now a Graduate Engineer in active travel at Sweco, delivering sustainable transport solutions that enhance health, accessibility, and quality of life, while progressing toward ICE chartership.
