Hinkley Point C is currently the largest construction project in Europe delivering 2 new nuclear reactors on the Southwest coast of the UK.

The marine works contract, undertaken by Balfour Beatty, has successfully constructed the power stations primary cooling water infrastructure, comprising approximately 10km of tunnels both onshore and out beneath the Bristol Channel. 

Our speakers will talk you through how they delivered the first of their kind offshore connections, enabling sea water to enter via embedded intake heads and spent water to discharge via a combined outfall system.

Barry Gilsenan

Barry Gilsenan is senior tunnel manager for Balfour Beatty, on the marine and tunnels contract and offshore tunnel to shaft connection scope at Hinkley Point C, He has over 30 years’ experience in construction with his most recent tunnel projects being, Paddington step free access tunnels, Bond Street Station upgrade and Crossrail’s eastern running tunnels and caverns.

Joe Hardwick is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 15 years’ experience in heavy civil construction and design across the UK and Australia. He has spent nearly six years on the Hinkley Point C project and is currently engineering manager for Balfour Beatty, leading the central engineering on the marine and tunnels scope.
