Overview

The construction sector is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, and clients, contractors and consultants are under increasing pressure to demonstrate measurable action on climate change throughout the delivery of infrastructure and built assets.

In 2022, NEC introduced secondary Option X29 (Climate Change) across its suite of NEC4 contracts, giving parties a contractual mechanism to embed specific, measurable climate requirements – such as carbon reduction targets, waste minimisation and use of renewable power – directly into the conditions of contract, with financial consequences attached through an optional Performance Table.

This talk will explain how Option X29 works in practice, what it requires of clients and contractors, and how it is being used – and is continuing to evolve – across the industry to drive better environmental outcomes on projects. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience following the presentation.

This event directly supports the “Sustainable development, including decarbonisation and the application of nature positive solutions” mandatory theme within the ICE CPD Framework, helping professionally qualified members meet their annual CPD requirement across the three-year rolling cycle.
