The invisible superheroes of civil engineering will have their chance to shine through a brand-new category at the ICE South West Awards 2025.

The awards, held in association with Kier BAM, celebrate the achievements of civil engineers. They showcase emerging talent and highlight the positive contribution the industry makes to the region.

The annual awards are widely regarded as the region’s premier industry accolade, judged by a panel of senior leaders and experts who pay a site visit to every shortlisted scheme.

Previous project winners include the Dartmoor Line, Tintagel Castle Bridge and Hinkley Point C.

There are nine project awards recognising a wide range of criteria including resilience, sustainability, inclusion, community impact, creativity, and innovation.

Celebrating unsung heroes

This year, entries will also be asked to nominate someone from the project team, partners, clients or wider community who deserves a special mention as an unsung hero.

Miranda Housden, regional director, ICE South West, said: “Infrastructure projects involve lots of people with many different roles to play. But sometimes, the efforts of those who go above and beyond may be unintentionally lost or overlooked.

“By asking projects to nominate an unsung hero, we hope to shed light on the work that goes on behind the scenes or under the radar.

“We expect to uncover some surprising stories that show the breadth and diversity of the wider team contributing to the success of civil engineering.”

Recognising rising talent

Early career talent in the region is also recognised through the Apprentice and Graduate of the Year categories.

Both have attracted a record number of entries in recent years and provide a way for civil engineering organisations to celebrate the rising talent in the regional industry.

Entries for the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards are open until 5pm on Wednesday 30 April 2025.

The winners, including the inaugural unsung hero nominations, will be revealed at a gala ceremony in Bristol on Thursday 23 October 2025.
