Apprentices
Apprenticeships in the UK are a great way for individuals to learn while they earn.
Our experienced and knowledgeable teams can offer advice and support on a range of practical issues – from accreditation and training to wider industry engagement.
ICE professional qualifications give individuals international recognition for their knowledge, ability and skills, and it means we can support them throughout their careers.
ICE’s team can provide guidance and training for apprentices and their workplace mentors.
We’ll also work with you to help them throughout their journey. This includes helping them prepare for their End Point Assessment (only applicable in England) and their professional qualification with ICE.
As mentors play such a crucial role in an apprentice’s development, we will also work with them to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to perform their role effectively.
The team can provide support and guidance for apprentices and mentors over the phone or, if required, in their workplace.
We also have a range of resources to help apprentices and mentors. This includes mentor training, online webinars and workshops. Staff are also available to give talks in colleges, universities and the workplace.
And, as well as being able to accredit and approve educational programmes, ICE is registered to carry out End Point Assessments in England – find out more by clicking on the ‘England’ tab.
Likewise, click on your regional tab for information that’s unique to where you’re based.
As well as supporting universities, colleges and apprentices, we’re registered to carry out the End Point Assessments (EPAs) for the following standards:
(You can find Gateway requirements and application forms for each of these standards in the ‘Links and Guidance’ section below.)
To appoint ICE as your End Point Assessment organisation, please email [email protected].
We can also approve and accredit the qualifications that comprise those apprenticeships. Find out more by contacting our Education team at [email protected].
When apprentices have successfully completed their apprenticeship, they can apply to become an Engineering Technician (EngTech MICE) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng MICE) with ICE. In fact, the EPA application form has an option to apply for professional qualification.
An ICE professional qualification is the mark of excellence. It will put the apprentice on the road to a successful career and give them and their employer confidence in their abilities. It will also enable them to continue developing as a professional.
Embedding this offer in your programmes helps demonstrate that they are relevant to the industry and the profession.

Degree-level apprentices who would like to apply for an ICE professional qualification, must record and track their work experience in our easy-to-use online platform – IPD Online.
IPD is the ‘work experience’ part of the professional qualification, and our online tool enables the apprentice to map their experience to the required attributes.
Please read Roles and responsibilities for delivering Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeships for guidance on steps to take for apprentices wishing to achieve a professional qualification with ICE on completion of their apprenticeship.
Even if the apprentice isn’t sure they want to apply for a professional qualification at the end of the apprenticeship, it’s a good idea to encourage them use IPD Online, as it’ll allow them to apply in the future.

As well as apprentices, teaching staff can also become ICE members and take advantage of its benefits. Find out how to join.

Apprentices who are aiming to achieve an ICE professional qualification, must track and document their initial professional development (IPD). IPD is the ‘work experience’ part of the professional qualification, where apprentices develop the required knowledge, skills, and attributes they need.
ICE has also developed an easy-to-use online tool – IPD Online – which allows apprentices to record and manage their IPD and help them achieve their professional qualification.
