Further Learning

Further learning helps you meet the educational requirements for becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) . There are many ways to do further learning ranging from improving your on-the-job knowledge to getting another qualification.

What further learning do I need?

Here are some examples of qualifications and what you may need to move to IEng or CEng level:

• BEng (Hons) degree - Acceptable for IEng, further learning needed for CEng
• BSc (Hons) degree - Acceptable for IEng, further learning needed for CEng
• HNC, HND or foundation degree - Acceptable for EngTech, further learning needed for IEng

Further learning in education or at work

You have 2 options:

Education

You can study for another accredited qualification for IEng or CEng level. For example:

• If you have a HNC, HND or foundation degree, you'll need an accredited bachelor degree to become IEng-registered
• If you have an IEng-level accredited degree or equivalent

• If you have an accredited degree that partially meets the underpinning knowledge and understanding for registration as a Chartered Engineer, you'll need an accredited master's (MSc)

If you cannot find your degree on our accredited course search, our Academic Qualifications Panel will decide if your qualifications are suitable for IEng or CEng registration.

How to find an accredited further learning programme?

The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) website has a list of accredited courses for:

• CEng-level review (accredited further learning programmes for CEng)
• IEng-level review (bachelor's degree programmes)

Other postgraduate qualifications could also count towards your further learning. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

Once you have completed your approved programme of academic study email a certified copy of your degree certificate and degree transcript to [email protected].

Work

The knowledge you gain at work can help you to become professionally qualified. It can bridge the gap between the qualifications you already have and what you need for IEng or CEng.

There are 3 ways you can do further learning at work:

Further learning Examination – new route for graduates wanting to register for CEng

• You will hold an accredited bachelor degree that partially meets the underpinning knowledge and understanding for registration as a Chartered Engineer, or equivalent such as a degree covered by the Washington Accord
• You will have had at least two years’ experience working in the civil engineering industry
• The Further Learning Exam has two elements (a timed six-hour examination that allows you to provide answers to a case study designed to test your knowledge of the ICE Further Learning Examination syllabus and an accompanying technical submission)

Experiential Learning Assessment - route for graduates wanting to register for CEng or IEng

This is based on knowledge gained at work. The submission can be made retrospectively or learning can be planned and recorded over time. in either case, graduates will need support from a mentor.

Technical report and interview

• Involves writing a technical report and having an interview (ICE's Technical Report Route)
• Gives you a good opportunity to show you have the right experience and know-how.
